Tasting Notes

Medium depth of brick red color. Primary fruit aromas of Pinot-like red cherry are immersed in a savory and complex bouquet of leather, cigar box, orange peel and earthen notes. Similarly the palate is laden with savory and gamey characters harmoniously blending in with the classic Brunello style fruit of red cherry, sour cherry and plum. Initially smooth, rich and evenly textured the wine evolves through to a strong finish with ample dry, fine tannin to ensure a long life. A complex and interesting wine that deserves the time to open up and savor.

Vineyards

All the fruit was harvested exclusively from our home Vineyard, Poggio alla Pietra in what is now known as Moon Mountain District, Sonoma County. Sangiovese is best suited to steep and arid sites just like the volcanic red and rocky soil on the south facing slopes of Petroni Vineyards. Hand farmed according to organic principles, the vines are carefully maintained and the crop reduced to ensure ripe and concentrated wines are produced from this outstanding site.

Winemaking Techniques

Made in the style of Brunello, each block is picked at the right moment to harness the balance of acidity and ripe flavors. Destemmed and crushed to purpose built tanks, the must is fermented and remains on skins for an extended maceration of up to 40 days. The pressed wine is matured in a combination of French oak barriques and puncheons of which 20% are new each vintage.
